This is a 12-month learnership where municipality trains you to become a qualified firefighter. You get *monthly stipend R5,000 – R10,000* while training. After completion, you get certificate and are placed as permanent firefighter. *Matric required, no experience.*
You will learn: Firefighting, rescue operations, first aid, hazmat, fire prevention, using fire trucks, breathing apparatus.
*2. Firefighter Internship / EPWP Fire & Rescue*
3-24 months internship for youth. Work at fire station assisting qualified firefighters, responding to emergencies, community awareness. Stipend R4,000 – R8,000. Matric required.
*3. Permanent Firefighter / Fireman*
Full-time firefighter in municipality. Respond to fires, car accidents, floods, rescue operations, inspect buildings for fire safety. Salary *R10,000 – R18,500 per month* + overtime + danger allowance + benefits. Requires Matric + Firefighter 1 & 2 certificate OR learnership completed.
*4. Junior Firefighter / Cadet Firefighter*
Entry-level for Matriculants with Code C1 driver’s license. Assist senior firefighters.
*5. Fire Prevention Officer*
Inspect buildings, schools, businesses for fire compliance. Matric + Fire Prevention Certificate.

Requirements for Municipality Firefighter Jobs 2026
Municipality firefighter requirements are strict but fair:
*Minimum Requirements:*
– *Education:* Grade 12 / Matric Certificate – MUST HAVE Maths, English. Maths Literacy accepted in some municipalities but pure Maths advantage.
– *Age:* 18 – 35 years old for learnership / internship. 18 – 45 for permanent.
– *Citizenship:* South African citizen with valid SA ID. Must live in municipality area you apply for (proof of residence).
– *License:* Valid Driver’s License – Code B, C1 or EC advantageous. Many municipalities require Code C1 within 1 year.
– *Physical:* Must be PHYSICALLY FIT – must pass physical test: 2.4km run in 12 min, push-ups, sit-ups, carry 25kg, climb ladder, fear of heights test, confined space test.
– *Medical:* Must pass medical test – good eyesight (no color blindness), good hearing, no chronic disease, no fear of fire/blood.
– *Criminal Record:* NO criminal record – must be able to pass SAPS clearance.
– *Skills:* Brave, disciplined, teamwork, able to work under extreme pressure, willing to risk life, good communication, able to work shifts (day/night/weekends), willing to help community.
– *Other:* Must be able to swim (some municipalities), must not be claustrophobic, must be willing to attend 12-month intensive training.
